Lesson: Reflecting on & Refining of Information Gathered

Description

This step in the information literacy process is completed at the end of the information gathering and evaluation stages. The purpose of this lesson is to have students evaluate whether the information obtained during the information-gathering phase is sufficient to answer their research question. This lesson is best taught after students have formulated a question or research topic, understand the rudiments of searching for information, know how to determine the relevancy of information gathered, and have already gathered information for an assignment.

Materials for this Offline lesson:

Reflecting and Refining Checklist

Time allotment: 25 - 30 minutes

Grade Level: Grade 2 - 12

6. The student who is an independent learner is information literate and strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation.

Learning Outcomes

Students will understand that after they have gathered information for a question or topic that they should evaluate whether that information is sufficient or whether they will need to either gather more information or to refine their topic.

Suggested Procedure

Tell students that once they have gathered information for a research question or topic, they need to evaluate whether the information gathered is sufficient. They need to answer the question: "Is my question answerable given the information I have found?"

Student Activity:

Distribute the checklist. Go over the checklist with students, explaining the process of evaluating whether the information gathered is sufficient. Ask students if they have any other tips that they would pursue that aren't listed on the checklist.
