What is Blue Web'n?

Blue Web'n is an online library of outstanding Internet sites categorized by subject, grade level, and format (tools, references, lessons, hotlists, resources, tutorials, activities, projects). Blue Web'n does not attempt to catalog all educational sites. Sites are hand-picked and are, in our opinion, among the most useful for classroom or instructional use.
Who selects the sites? The sites in Blue Web'n are chosen by the Education Advocates. Every couple of years, we rotate the task. Education Advocates have advanced degrees in education and/or library science and have numerous years of teaching or library experience.

How do I find sites?

Use the Search tool to find a specific site or to narrow your search. The Search tool provides the most search features such as Keyword, Grade, Dewey Decimal, and more.
For example, if you select "Education - Curriculum" from the drop down menu, you will get a list of sites that align with either state or national standards. You can limit or expand your search using the other choices.
Use the Content Table to find sites sorted by both subject and format (i.e. "English References" or "Science Projects"). Once your results are compiled, you may further limit your search depending on the number of results.

Find sites by broad subject area (i.e. "History" or "Earth Science"), browse the clickable Subject Area list. Once your results are compiled, you may further limit your search depending on the number of results.

How are sites categorized?

Sites are categorized by subject based on the California State Frameworks, Dewey Decimal Numbers, and grade level. In addition, we have tried to help you decide how to use the sites by categorizing them by format (lessons, activities, projects, resources, references, tutorials, and tools). To find out more about formats, see our Brief Definition of Types.

What do the stars mean?

The stars show our ratings of applications. In 2002, we eliminated all 1 and 2 star sites so that our database would reflect a higher level of quality. Since we're skimming the cream of the crop, most sites get 4 or 5 stars. Lower ranked sites are occasionally chosen if they show promise or fall into under-represented categories. See our Rubric for Evaluating Applications for specifics on our criteria.

How else can I use Blue Web'n?

You can use Filamentality to create your own web-based hotlists, treasure hunts, and webquests. Filamentality prompts you to "fill in the blanks" with links, instructions, questions, and then builds a Web activity by a simple click of a button!

How do I subscribe or cancel the Weekly Update e-mail?

You can subscribe to the Blue Web'n Weekly Update to get notifications of the latest Hot Site and new Blue Web'n sites. To subscribe, send an email to

bluewebn-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

with subscribe in the Subject. Leave the message empty and no signatures, pics, etc. You can also go to the BlueWeb'n Yahoo!Groups archive and sign up from there.

Thanks!

We appreciate your feedback and link suggestions.
