• Library of Congress - Use the search box in the upper right hand corner. Type in 'civil war'.

• Civil War Maps - Library of Congress collection of reconaissance, coastal, sketch, and theater-of-war maps. Includes troop movements and fortifications.

• Time Line of the Civil War - Year-by year time line of the 'war between the states'.

• Civil War Photographs - The Library of Congress's searchable database of thousands of Civil War photos.

• Civil War Soldiers and Sailors - A web site designed by the National Park System, this site allows you to search by soldier name, battle, even cemeteries!

• Civil War Treasures from the New York Historical Society - Lots of primary source documents, including recruiting posters, photographs, and writings.

• Civil War @ The Smithsonian Institute - Paintings, drawings, and sketches from the Smithsonian's huge collection.

• A Storm of Shot and Shell - Website on weapons of the Civil War.

• The War for States' Rights - This site has a distinctly Southern point of view, as you'll see when you read the opening paragraphs. However, it contains excellent information on these topics: prisons, medical care, espionage, soldier's life, and many more.

• Espionage in the Civil War - Article from 'Historical Encyclopedia of the Civil War'.

• Civil War Prisons - Information about prison camps, both Union and Confederate.

• Civil War Prison Camp, Elmira, New York - Chemung County maintains this site about the well known Civil War Prison camp in Elmira.
