Fairy Tales Theme - Come and have fun with fairy tales theme. This section will include classic fairy tales, folk tales, tall tales and legends from around the world. These timeless stories will help children learn valuable life lessons, reinforce various skills, and also to 'visit' other places and people. Visit a story title or theme to find the story text and/or online story, lesson plans & activities that include easy instructions and a list of materials needed. You will find crafts, printable activities, fairy tales coloring pages, and related resources.

The Cinderella project - This WebQuest provides a strong framework for understanding the features of a fairytale. Students are challenged to write a version to reflect their own culture. Links to a wide variety of versions of Cinderella provide a multicultural theme. By deconstructing some versions of the tale, provided online, and given support to write, students will enhance their writing abilities. They are guided through the use of features such as setting, plot, characters and timelines. Details of the appropriate style and what needs to be included in the illustrations are explicit. Students are also asked to compare and contrast two characters and write this up. Guidance is provided as participants become proficient with Inspiration and Microsoft Word during their quest. A rubric is provided for assessment. Despite there being several dead links this a worthwhile, in-depth activity.
The Realm of Fairy Tales - An Original WebQuest for grades 4-5 In this webquest, you will be working together with a partner to do the following activities: Read a selection of online fairy tales. Analyze fairy tales by identifying recurring themes. Outline a story map for your own fairy tale, including standard story elements and fairy tale themes. Write your own fairy tale, based on your story map.
The Teaching of 'Snow White' - Snow White is a scholarly resource for all those interested in folk and fairy tales and, more specifically, in the tale Snow White. It is designed as a teaching tool for group use during a course, and/or for individual study. The purpose is to bring together a sizable number of resources so that the user can focus on this traditional tale and study it in different versions and variants published over an extended time frame. Although one could choose to focus only on textual variations or on different illustrations for a single text which might lead to greater depth on that narrower focus, the broader teaching emphasis of this site led me to cast a wider net, including both. Inexpensive 'supermarket' editions of Snow White are included, along with more 'literary' versions, both because these are more accessible to many children and to demonstrate that inexpensive, mass-market books represent a range of artistic quality and styles.

A modern fairytale - These Year 4 English assessment examples include a task description and three annotated student work samples with teacher commentaries. Students were asked to write a modern version of a fairytale, illustrate it and then develop it as a PowerPoint presentation. The material was produced as part of the Middle Phase of Learning Cluster Project 2006 (search 02996, a TIPS resource) which focused on providing professional development in literacy, numeracy and assessment for middle years teachers.
Absolutely Whootie: Stories to Grow By - Description: This collection of fairy and folk tales (thirty-one approximately) from around the world emphasises positive values. Stories can be chosen from a drop-down menu, searched for under parameters such as the age of child, the country of origin, the type of story, time allocated for reading and the theme of the value, or by keywords. Each month a new story is added. Stories are pre-tested on children from six to twelve years for a popularity rating. After the stories are read aloud, children are asked to interact with Whootie Owl by emailing him with their reactions to the questions that follow the story. Children are also invited to illustrate the stories they have enjoyed and their artwork is displayed with the story. Teachers may download copies for class use. The commercial link, 'Whootie Land', offers children the chance to buy audiocassettes of stories, but also has free stories to listen to and a number of educational games. The 'Free class plan' link has four lesson plans, customised for ages six to ten. 'Great links' leads to sites with fairy and folk tales. The emphasis on positive values woven through these fairytales for reading aloud makes the site and the stories useful for students and teachers of Years 1 - 4 for personal development and values clarification issues in Health and Physical Education. Candlelight Stories - Description: The site contains a number of stories for listening to, as well as illustrated stories for individual reading. Storywriting activities include the provision of space for on-line publication of children's stories. There are over twenty folk stories from different cultures in audio format, some, like 'Pinocchio', presented in serial form, a new chapter each week. There is also a video, 'Alpha Mouse movie', requiring Shockwave. A downloadable 'Spelling machine' and spelling games provide useful interactivity for lower and middle primary children. The illustrated stories in text include some original stories with messages suitable for children in lower primary classes. 'The Man and the tomato plant', for example, tells of a man who ignores love in his quest for wealth but is given another chance, which he takes. Other illustrated stories include 'Sally saves Christmas', 'The Panchatantra', from India, 'Thumbelina', 'Maggie May goes to the moon!' and 'Big mistreat'n bittersweet'n blues', a Jewish story. The 'Teachers centre' contains a discussion place, some guidelines for helping children get their stories published on the Internet and some reviews of games and books, in the developmental stage. The audio clips require Media Player, and there could be some difficulty opening the audio files, but the number and quality of illustrated stories and other activities make the site worthwhile. Cinderella, Cinderella, Cinderella, - This lesson is anchored in third grade language arts standards but can be used through the fifth grade. Activity Overview In this unit students will: read and respond to a various versions of Cinderella. They distinguish between the structural features of text and the literary terms or elements (i.e., theme, plot, setting, and characters). comprehend basic plots of a classic version of Cinderella and some of its variations. determine what characters are like by what they say or do and by how the author or illustrator portrays them. identify the main events of the plot, their causes, and how each influences future action(s) use knowledge of the situation and setting and of a character's traits and motivations to determine the causes for that character's actions. learn to use a thesaurus online and/or in book form.

Grimm Fairy Tales - GrimmFairyTales: Folk and fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. Read and hear interactive, narrated, animated stories. Children's literature and folklore classics featuring animals, princesses, magic, and fabulous creatures! Grimm Brothers cartoon characters present a biography of Jacob Ludwig Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm. Online books link to e-learning, colouring downloads, arts, flash games, and other kidstuff.
Grimms' fairy tales: from folklore to forever - Description: The twelve 'unvarnished' tales from the Grimm brothers presented here retain much of the original elements of cruelty and capriciousness that delighted European readers in the nineteenth century. A biography of the Grimms, magazine articles and links to other fairy and folk tale sites are included.Children can select stories on a common theme (such as stepmothers) or choose from a list of contents. Stories include favourites such as 'Brother and sister', 'Little Red-Cap', 'Little Briar Rose', 'Little Snow White' and 'The frog king' as well as lesser-known tales such as 'The seven ravens' and 'Mother Holle'. The site is beautifully presented, and the stories have the original nineteenth century illustrations from different publications. Among the illustrators is Walter Crane. Some stories have audio files with the stories read in clear male and female voices. For teachers and older readers there is the excellent National Geographic online article on the Brothers Grimm and the origins of many of their stories. Warning: the fairytale forum is uncensored. Mary Cavanaugh's childrenstory.com - The four sections on this site are 'Fairytales', 'Nursery rhymes', 'Interactive stories' and 'Holiday stories'. Some stories are available to be read aloud if Real Player can be loaded. The site also accepts stories, presumably for children, for publication on the site. Among the fourteen fairy stories are 'Snow White and Rose Red', 'The frog prince' and 'Cinderella'. The eighteen nursery rhymes include 'Little Jack Horner', 'Little Boy Blue' and 'Mary, Mary'. 'Crystals and unicorns' is an 'interactive' story composed by Grade 2 students at Douglas Elementary School, in Columbus Ohio. The story and the illustrations were created by the students but the story is no longer interactive. There are three stories in the 'Holiday' section, 'The night before Christmas', 'Frosty the snowman' and 'Jolly old Santa Claus'. Story arts online - Description: The stories collected on this site are 'concise folktale plots retold by Heather Forest for students to explore and retell'. They are also designed for students to use as recitation texts to improve performance skills. There are lesson plans and other material for teachers, a collection of story-related activities, projects and games developed by Heather Forest for workshops and to encourage speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. These include students taking their tales to other classes for a storytelling concert and the '1001 nights festival', where the story is left unfinished each day and completed the next day. The stories are grouped under 'Stories in a nutshell...concise plots for the retelling' and 'Aesop's ABC...twenty six fables'. There are thirty-six stories from Asia, Europe and Africa in the former group and twenty-six fables in the latter. Some of the stories in both groups contain wisdom or themes which would be lost on very young children, but there are sufficient appropriate stories to use with early childhood classes. Most of the stories would be easily assimilated by middle and upper primary students, who could also benefit from practising retelling the stories. They are also an excellent source of ideas for artwork in early childhood classes and above. The German Fairy-tale Road - Description: The German Fairy-tale Road, which stretches from Hanau (near Frankfurt) to Bremen, links places where the Grimm brothers, in the early nineteenth century, gathered folk and fairytales. This project of Bayswater Primary School contains links to a number of fairytales in German and English as well as interesting facts and stories about the towns along the way. It also contains titles, texts and audio clips of folk songs, crossword, information about the Grimm brothers, including a timeline in German of their lives. Each month a particular tale is featured, with a German version, a simple German version, an English version, a song, if available and activities for German classes. The Internet public library story hour - Description: The stories on this site are in seven sections. 'Mother Goose on the web' are stories available in text and audio, comprising: 'Three little kittens', 'Old Mother Hubbard' and 'Little Red Riding Hood'. 'Mousie's adventures' is a rather amateurishly illustrated story of a six-year-old child and her toy mouse. 'It's magic' is a series of five stories about magic, including 'The magic fire truck' and 'The magic atlas'. 'The tortoise and the hare' is an adaptation featuring an ultra-competitive hare and Slow Moe, the tortoise. 'Molly Whuppie' is an old English fairytale in the style of 'Jack and the beanstalk'. 'Do spiders live on the World Wide Web?' uses clever illustrations to show different aspects of the cyberworld, e.g. a mouse is depicted both as a small, squeaky, furry rodent and as a way of telling the computer what to do without using the keyboard. 'The fisherman and his wife', is available as an illustrated adaptation of the folk tale or as a downloadable animated version for Macintosh computers. 'The boy who drew cats' is an adaptation of a Japanese fairytale. Most stories are available as text only or with illustrations, and should be popular with children from preschool to Year 3 as well as middle primary.
