The Internet Resources

Center for History and New Media - This site links to a collection of high quality sites focused on teaching and learning history. It offers primary and secondary sources, as well as research tools.
Chicago Metro History Education Center - This organization provides important resources on teaching historical research skills to middle and high school students. It also sponsors the annual Chicago Metro History Fair.

Organization of American Historians - OAH is a professional organization for historians and also provides resources in the teaching of history. This link brings you directly to the teaching resources, but it is important to explore the site fully to see the range of resources it offers.
Reading, Writing and Researching for History - A solid guide for researching and writing history. These guidelines help students as they learn how to write historical narratives.
Teaching High School Social Studies - This site is produced by Annenberg Media and offers online professional development to teachers. This particular section of the site focuses on teaching the social studies to high school students. The site provides classroom vignettes of experienced high school teachers modeling best practices in teaching a range of subjects within the social studies.

The American Historical Association - The AHA is a professional organization for historians. Teachers are encouraged to become members and specific resources for teaching history are available from the organization.
The Learning Page - This is a site sponsored by the Library of Congress on the teaching of history. It provides lessons and teaching resources for use with primary documents.

World History

A Force More Powerful - 'A Force More Powerful' is a video series on non-violent social movements during the 20th century. It offers case studies in these social movements from across the globe. The site describes each story and also has teaching materials for each.
AskAsia - This site is sponsored by the Asia Society and provides curricular resources and reference materials for teaching about Asia.
Bridging World History - This is an online multimedia course in world history.
History World - Secondary source on world history with chronological, geographical and thematic organization.
National Center for History in the Schools - The National Center for History in the Schools offers the National Standards for World History along with curricular materials to support standards-based instruction in World History.
National Council for History Education - Provides teacher resources and links to other resources in the teaching of history.
Teaching about Religion - This site provides web resources on teaching about religion for public school educators.
Women in World History - This site offers primary sources and curriculum materials on women's experiences in history.
World History Connected - This is an online journal on the learning and teaching of world history.
World History Matters - This site provides links to primary sources in world history. It also has guidelines for primary source analysis and sample curricula.

US History

American Journeys - This site focuses on documents related to explorations and settlement of North America.
American Memory - This site is sponsored by the Library of Congress and offers primary sources related to US history. American Memory also offers some curricular materials based on items from the collection.
Changing Neighborhoods - This is an online exhibit of seven settlement houses in Chicago.
Chicago History Project - Click on 'Resources' to access a range of websites with online archival material.
Digital History - Provides primary sources with introductory descriptions.
Documenting the American South - Offers primary documents related to the history of the American South.
GIS for History - This site offers ways to integrate Geographic Information System (GIS) data into American history lessons. The projects and lessons on the site use historical census data and interactive maps to engage students in historical inquiry.
History Matters - US History - History Matters offers primary sources from US history and curricular materials in its 'Digital Blackboard' section.
National Archives Digital Classroom - The National Archives offers primary sources and curriculum materials to assist in teaching those sources.
National Park Service - The National Park Service has resources on American history organized in themes. These include such areas as economics, education, ethnic groups, industry, women and many more.
National Park Service History and Culture - The National Park Service offers a range of resources for teachers including teaching with historic places and museum collections.

National Content Standards in Economics - The National Council for Economic Education provides content standards in economics for grades K-12.
National Geographic Xpeditions - This site of the National Geographic Society provides curriculum resources for teaching geography.
National Geography Standards - The National Geographic Society outlines standards in geography education.

American Anthropological Association - This site provides links to resources for integrating anthropology into K-12 teaching.

National Council for the Social Studies -
Peace Corps - Activities and lessons based on Peace Corps Volunteers' cross-cultural experiences.
Resources on Teaching Social Psychology -
Social Science Research Council - This site provides online essays and research from social scientists on a variety of current social issues. It offers collections of essays on events such as September 11th and Hurricane Katrina and issues like globalization and youth activism.
Standards for High School Psychology Courses from the APA -
The World Factbook - The World Factbook is a CIA sponsored site with detailed statistical information on specific countries.

Teaching with Technology

Filamentality - Provides tools to design web-based activities.
Virtual Salt - This site focuses on resources for conducting web-based research in general. At the botton of the home page, it has several links to guidelines for evaluating web sites, which are especially helpful.
Webquest - Webquest is a collection of web-based student activities designed by teachers in a range of subjects and grades levels. The site has numerous activities specific to using the internet to teach middle and high school level social studies.

Standards and Assessment

Expectations of Excellence - The National Council for the Social Studies offers thematic and interdisciplinary standards in the social studies and specific subject matter standards in history, political science, economics, geography and psychology.
Illinois Learning Standards -
Jonathan Mueller, North Central College - This site is offered by a member of the education faculty at North Central College in Illinois. It provides a range of information on performance-based assessment.
NCREL Portfolio Assessment -
NWREL Assessment Toolkit -
National History Standards - Provides both standards in historical thinking and in US and World history.
Rubistar - Rubistar provides teachers with tools to create assessment rubrics. It offers the option to choose a pre-designed or self-designed rubric.
