At Sea: Marine Science and Technology Internships--Apps due March 27, 2009 - Must be 18: This summer approximately ten to fifteen positions will be funded by the MATE Center for internships aboard sea-going research vessels that are part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS). Interns will work with marine technicians on shore and at sea, learning how to operate and maintain a variety of scientific and navigational equipment, and run a scientific research cruise

Earthwatch Student Challenge Awards Program-deadline sept 5 2008 - deadline for proposals for the 2009 fielding season is September 5, 2008.The Student Challenge Awards Program (SCAP) offers students aged 16-18 gifted in the arts and humanities an opportunity to spend two to three intensive weeks during the summer at a scientific research station.
Monterey Bay Aquarium Volunteer Student GuideProgram - We are currently recruiting for the 2009 Student Guide program. The student guide informational meeting is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2009 from 9 am to noon at the Aquarium. NASA Sharp --see high school counselor - The internship program is an 8 week summer program at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio designed for college bound high school students with interest in technical disciplines such as engineering, science, math and other technical areas. Participating students not only learn a lot about engineering and sciences during the hands on research apprenticeship, have a great time in the program, but also earn a weekly salary for their work.

National Youth Science Camp: Apps due January 23, 2009 - The Office of the Secretary for Education is coordinating the selection of two highly qualified high school seniors to represent California at the National Youth Science Camp. The National Youth Science Camp® (NYSC®) is one of the nation's premier programs in secondary science education. Since its inception in 1963 as part of West Virginia's Centennial Celebration, the four-week summer program has offered educational forums and recreational activities that encourage the development of thoughtful scientific leadership. All expenses paid. NYSC Delegates arrive in Charleston, West Virginia, on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, and depart on Saturday, July 25, 2009.
Range and Natural Resources Camp--June 21-26,2009--Half Moon Bay - For 15-18 year olds to experience natural resources and learning with professionals: riparian, rangeland, wildlife management, projects, forestry, careers etc.
Research Science Institute--deadline January 16, 2009 - June to August, 2009. Each summer approximately 70 high school students gather for six of the most stimulating weeks of their young lives. Selected from the United States and other nations, these students participate in a rigorous academic program which emphasizes advanced theory and research in mathematics, the sciences, and engineering.
Research Science Institute: Center for Excellence in Education--deadline 1/16/09 - Each summer, 80 of the word's most accomplished high school students gather at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the Research Science Institute (RSI). Invited students enjoy a six-week, cost-free program designed to kick-start their careers of leadership in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology.

Summer Institute for the Gifted--app deadline is May 1, 2009 - The Summer Institute for the Gifted is a unique and prestigious three-week residential or day, co-educational, summer program for academically talented students in grades one through eleven.
Summer Science Program-Apps due March 20, 2009 - The Summer Science Program that exposes academically gifted high school students to advanced topics in mathematics, physics, astronomy, and computer science. Unique in the world for its hands-on, practical approach, the Summer Science Program (SSP) challenges its participants to determine the orbit of a minor planet using their own telescopic observations, measurements and software, working in teams of three.
Summer Workshop on Atmospheric, Earth and Space Science--Apps due April 30, 2009 - The high school student workshop features an exciting four-day agenda in meteorology, astronomy, land remote sensing, and geology. Young Scholar Program at UC Davis--app due March 31, 2009 - The UC Davis Young Scholars Program is a summer residential research program designed to expose 40, high achieving high school sophomores and juniors to the world of original research in the biological, agricultural, and environmental sciences. Participants in the 2003 UCD-YSP will work one-on-one with faculty research faculty in state of the art laboratories for six weeks. Each student will work on an individual project and prepare a journal quality paper and symposium presentation about their work.

Scholarships/Awards

Annie's Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship-check spring 2009 - Through our Environmental Studies scholarship program, we will award lucky and deserving students with $1000. This money can be used for tuition, books, and other educational expenses. Additional scholarship information is available on this website.
Dolores E Fisher Award--due mid March - The Education Department of the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society is pleased to announce an award in honor of Dolores Fisher and her extraordinary achievements and strong interest in the oceans. The cash honorarium of $1000 and torphy/momento is awarded annually and will be given to a young woman age 16 to 30. Selection will be based on the criteria of character and potential.
Galileo Memorial Scholarship--Apps due Feb. 16, 2009 - The scholarship program awards range from $1,000 to $2,500. Any high school senior who intends to pursue a career in engineering, mathematics, or physical or natural sciences is eligible to apply. Past finalists have had grade point averages near 4.0, high SAT scores, and involvement in numerous extracurricular activities. Applicants must be either residents of the eight counties comprising the AIAA San Francisco Section (San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, and Solano) or children of NASA Ames Research Center civil service employees, retirees, or on-site contract employees.

John D. Issacs Memorial Scholarship-$2,500-- Apps due April 9, 2009 - The John D. Isaacs Memorial Scholarship was established in 1981 to recognize excellence in research by high school students, to encourage interest in marine science at the high school level, and to encourage pursuit of scholastic excellence in higher education.
Lowes Outdoor Classroom Grant--Apps due February 13, 2009 - Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper and National Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine have partnered to create an outdoor classroom grant program to provide schools with additional resources to improve their science curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences outside the traditional classroom. All K-12 public schools in the United States are welcome to apply.
Marine Technology Society Scholarship--April 15, 2009 - High school seniors who plan to study a marine science/engineering/technology field and who have been accepted into a full-time college curriculum
Presidents Environmental Youth Awards--App deadline December 31 every year - Since 1971, EPA has sponsored the President’s Environmental Youth Awards (PEYA). The program recognizes young people across America for projects which demonstrate their commitment to the environment. Young people in all 50 states and the U.S. territories are invited to participate in the program.
Questbridge - QuestBridge is a program that links bright, motivated low-income students with educational and scholarship opportunities at some of the nation's best colleges.
Young Eco Hero Awards--Apps due February 28, 2009 - Recognize individual accomplishment of young people (8-16) who have carreid out personal action projects to significantly imporve Earth's environments.

Center for Talented Youth-John Hopkins University - Summer programs offer eligible students from all over the country and around the world the opportunity to engage in challenging academic work in the company of peers who share their exceptional abilities and love of learning. While the focus is on rigorous academics and learning, the social experience that results from bringing these students together is an integral part of the program. Conserv School--Inspiring Environmental Stewardship - Conserve’s mission is to inspire young people to environmental stewardship through academics and engagement with the forests, lakes, and wildlife of Conserve School’s 1200 acre Lowenwood campus. The Lowenstine Honors Scholarship program assures that this opportunity is affordable. The scholarship covers full tuition, room, and board. Families are responsible for a $200 supply fee, incidental costs, and transportation to and from the school. For 2010 and 2011 all accepted students will receive the Lowenstine Honors Scholarship.

Project Inspire: NASA-deadline passed - The Interdisciplinary National Science Project Incorporating Research and Education Experience, or INSPIRE, is a multi-tiered year-round program designed for students in ninth- to 12th -grade who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education and careers.
Science Buddies, Science Fair Project Resources - Science Buddies is a non-profit organization empowering students from all walks of life to help themselves and each other develop a love of science and an understanding of the scientific method. 2010 Thacher Environmental Research Contest entry due 4/5/10 - The 2010 Thacher awards will be given to secondary school students (grades 9-12) demonstrating the best use of satellites and other geospatial technologies or data to study Earth. Eligible tools and data include satellite remote sensing, aerial photography, geographic information systems (GIS), and Global Positioning System (GPS). The main focus of the project must be on the application of the geospatial tool(s) or data to study a problem related to Earth's environment.
Alliance for Science High School Essay Contest--Essay deadline Feb 12, 2009 - Topics: Climate and Evolution or Agriculture and Evolution. Submission
American Planning Association High School Essay Contest--Deadline: 1/15/09 - open to students who are juniors or seniors during the academic year. Each year, the first place winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship to the college or university he or she attends after graduation.
California Student Media and Multimedia Festivel -- Submissions due April 7, 2009 - The Festival celebrates projects and learning with media and multimedia projects by students. There is no entry fee. Overall winners earn $1,000 awards.
Congressional Award - The Congressional Award is a public partnership created by Congress to promote and recognize achievement, initiative, and service in America's youth. Dupont Challenge 2009--essay deadline passed - Science Essay Competition--
Dupont Challenge--Essays due 1/31/09 - Your opportunity to write a 700-1000 word essay discussing a scientific or technological development, event or theory that has captured your interest and attention. The essay deadline is early in February.
Exploravision awards -- January 30th, 2009 - A contest for k-12 encourgaging students to combine thier imaginations with the tools of science to create and explore a vision of a future technology. Entries are due the end of January and award winners are announced early in March.
Intel Science Talent Search--deadline Nov 19, 2008 - The Science Talent Search (STS) is America’s oldest and most prestigious science research competition for high school seniors.Each spring, 40 finalists are selected from a nationwide pool of thousands to attend the week-long Science Talent Institute in Washington, D.C. There, students have the opportunity to present their research projects to the general public and members of the scientific community at the National Academy of Sciences, meet with distinguished government leaders and participate in a rigorous judging process. Over $1 million is awarded annually to Intel STS participants and their schools. Awards range from $5,000 scholarship grants and laptop computers for all finalists to the grand prize of a $100,000 college scholarship.

National Ocean Bowl -- Apps due April 11th, 2009 - Inaugurated in 1998, the NOSB provides an educational forum for students to excel in math and science and receive national recognition for their diligence and talents. NOSB has proven that it can generate student interest and excitement about science and the oceans, giving young people a chance to examine marine science, both as an in-depth area of study and as a possible career.
Siemens Westinghouse Competition-- Apps due October 24, 2008 - The Siemens Foundation, in partnership with the College Board, established the Siemens Westinghouse Competition. The Competition promotes excellence by encouraging students to undertake individual or team research projects in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology, or in combinations of these disciplines. Scholarships range from $1,000 - 100,000.
The California Envirothon--Apps deadline passed - The California Envirothon is an outdoor natural resource education program for high school students grade 9-12. In the field, students are challenged to work as a team to answer written questions and conduct hands-on projects focusing on environmental issues. Students from all over California join together to explore the environment in five disciplines: Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics, Soils and a current environmental issue.
USA Biology Olympiad -- App due January 16, 2009 - The Mission of the USA Biology Olympiad is to encourage excellence in biology education throughout the United States. It propels American high school students and their teachers toward the gold standard in biology.
Volvo Adventure Award-Deadline 1/31/09 - The award is for teams of two to five young people working on a practical action project that will improve their school or community environment.
Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition -- deadline has passed - The future health of the American population depends in large part upon the knowledge and ability of our upcoming health leaders,practitioners and researchers. The Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) competition for original student research is designed to inspire talented students to investigate the many behavioral, biological, environmental and social factors that affect health and, based upon this knowledge, to identify ways to improve the health of the public. The YES Competition offers college scholarship awards to high school juniors and seniors who conduct outstanding research projects that apply epidemiological methods of analysis to a health-related issue.
Young Naturalists Awards--Deadline is March 2, 2009. - A research-based essay contest for students in grades 7-12 to promote participation and communication in science.
