This Hotlist is designed for Technology Planning Teams in California public schools to use when working on the first two components of the required technology plan.

Research/General Information

Appalachia Educational Laboratory (AEL) - One of the ten regional laboratories working in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education, one of AEL's focus areas is technologies for tomorrow's students.
Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow - A report for a ten-year study of the impact of classroom technology use on both teachers and students.
California's Education Technology Survey - In March of 2001, the State of California, in collaboration with the California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP), launched a new online data collection activity in the area of education technology. Public schools were asked to complete an online survey on the status of education technology to provide the State with information on the status of technology in California schools. The online survey replaces several other data collection efforts, including the Digital High School survey. Schools will be asked to update their data at least annually.
Center for Applied Research in Educational Technology - Find the latest research on a variety of topics related to technology use in education.
Coalition for Community Schools: Evaluation of Community Schools - Schools with shared facilities are found to be able to offer broader learning opportunities for students, high-quality services for students and families, higher student achievement, and a more efficient use of tax dollars. The study found improvements in 46 of 49 school-community programs, such as academic gains, improved attendance, reduced suspensions, reduced high-risk behaviors and increased parental involvement. The report concludes 'It is time for community schools to be recognized as an important component of the education reform movement.' Making Sure Technology Pays Off - This 12-minute PowerPoint slide show is narrated by Harvey Barnett of WestEd and reviews research on the use of technology in education and its implications.
North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) - One of the ten regional laboratories working in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education, NCREL's main focus area is technology.
SouthEast Initiatives Regional Technology in Education Consortium - A variety of useful resources including 'Lessons Learned: Factors Influencing the Effective Use of Technology for Teaching and Learning,' a report looking at technology use in school from 1995-2000 (downloadable .pdf file available on Publications page).
West Virginia Basic Skills/Computer Education - Information about study conducted in West Virginia about the effect of technology on student performance. When you access the Home page, search for West Virginia to find the results of the study.
What Works Clearinghouse - Although this site is still under construction, it will be an important source of information for schools and districts seeking out studies they can use for identifying research-based instructional strategies.

Data Collection: Proficiency Levels

CTAP2 Assessment - CTAP2 is an online self-assessment tool that allows educators to determine their level of technology proficiency: Introductory, Intermediate, or Proficient. The self-assessment is based upon rubrics established in each area of technology competency and aligned with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) technology standards.
Finding your Way through the Data Smog - An article by Joe Slowinski that discussed why you collect data and how to use it. A good example for a data-based professional development plan is included.
Learning with Technology Profile Tool - The Learning With Technology Profile Tool is a computer program intended to help educators think carefully about their practice in the areas of engaged learning and technology. The program presents indicators of engaged learning and indicators of technology. For each indicator there are three choices that educators can compare to their own practice. When finished, educators can view the results in a graphical format to help identify their strengths and weaknesses.
STaRChart - The CEO Forum's Interactive School Technology and Readiness (STaR) Chart, a self-assessment tool designed to provide schools with the information they need to better integrate technology into their educational process. Here you can complete an online, multiple-choice questionnaire that will provide you with instant feedback on how well your school is doing in this process.
Technology Program Evaluation - You can access the Technology Integration Process Gauge here in online or print format. An excellent tool for assessing current levels of technology integration in schools.

Data Collection: Student Information

CDE's DataQuest - At this site you can do customized searches and create reports using a variety of data about individual schools and districts. Good resource for information on demographics and student achievement in California.
Education Data Partnership (Ed-Data) - Fiscal, demographic, and performance data on California's K-12 public schools.
Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Homepage - SAT/9 reports for California schools going back to 1998.

Curriculum/Models

California Learning Resource Network - This site offers information about supplemental electronic educational materials. Four content areas are included: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and History/Social Science.
Community Learning Network - This is a site designed to help K-12 teachers integrate technology into the classroom. Here you?ll find over 5,800 annotated links to educational sites with free resources, all organized by theme pages and keyword search.
Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources - Provides access to the seven current frameworks in California as well as other information.
Knowledge Loom - A site where educators can find successful models for technology integration, read the research, and more.
National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) - This site provides access to the national standards for administrators, teachers, and students. You will also find profiles and example lessons.
Planning for Technology: Putting the Pieces Together - WestEd's recently revamped technology planning toolkit offers a wide variety of resources including sample standards-based lessons and instructional units that model technology integration, information about professional development, and monitoring and assessment tools.
Portical for School Administrators - Many resources including articles and a searchable database of resources for school administrators in areas including curriculum, technology planning, data-based decision making, maintenance and operations, and assessment. The Briefcase of Templates and Tools includes information on technology planning and program evaluation.
Technology Counts 2002: E-Defining Education - This special report looks at online learning and teaching.

Professional Development

CTAP OnLine - CTAP OnLine is a site devoted to helping teachers understand, apply, and teach technology in their classrooms. Courses cover personal proficiency skills, technology integration in the curriculum, information literacy, standards, assessment, and more. CTAP OnLine courses can be taken entirely online, administered in a face-to-face setting, or a combination of the two. CTAP OnLine is administered by the Butte County Office of Education, and as such is not a CTAP endorsed or supported site from any other region.
Chapter 12: Coaching for a Change - Jamie McKenzie writes, 'Coaching may be the most effective way to convert reluctant colleagues into enthusiastic users of new technologies.' This article gives an overview of how this staff sevelopment model might look in a school setting.
Connected University - Connected University, an easy-to-use, accredited program, provides online professional development you can count on for challenging content, interactivity, and convenience.
Fundamental choices determine quality of professional learning - This article discusses the importance of 'fundamental choices' in designing staff development for educators.
Information Literacy Sampler - This article offers several literacy models that assist in teaching students how to question, search, evaluate, and properly cite information they find both on and offline.
Quality Counts 2003: If I Can't Learn From You - The seventh special report published by Ed Week looks at the Teacher Gap and need for professional development training.
StarSchools - STAR-Online offers staff development Modules for using technology in the classroom and keeps track of them with an online Portfolio. In addition, participants can access communication tools, resources, and support.
The International Education and Resource Network (I*EARN) - I*EARN, a network of educators and students who use communications technology in projects to improve the health of the planet, provides a model of professional development that demonstrates collaboration, community, and ongoing local support for educators. I*EARN uses technology to encourage global communications and combat hate and intolerance.
