Historical Background

• World War I - Trenches on the Web - These pages contain information on the people, places, and events that comprised one of the worst calamities of modern history. Entire kingdoms were to vanish in the clash.

• BBC - World War I History - Explore a year-by-year account of major events. Photographs, dramatised diaries and interviews with veterans explore key themes of World War One.

• Canada and the War Front - World War I was mainly fought in Europe. It raged along two fronts. The eastern ( Russian) front and in western Europe (France). For Canadians, World War I was mainly a deadly struggle on the western front. Over a stretch of close to 1000 km, from Switzerland to the North Sea, the land was carved into trenches. Troops on both sides dug trenches to avoid mass slaughter by machine guns and artillery. Methods used to break this stalemate were poison gas, machine guns and, later in the war, tanks. Ypres , the Somme and the battle of Vimy Ridge were a few of the key battles most memorable in Canadian history. World War I gave Canada a feeling of maturity and proved that we were independent form Britain

• Women in World War One - Thirty Thousand Women Were There - It wasn't until the United States got involved in World War One that some parts of the government got serious about using woman power. As the Army stumbled around bureaucratic red tape trying to figure out how to enlist women the Navy simply ignored the War Department dissenters and quickly recruited women. Nearly 13,000 women enlisted in the Navy and the Marine Corps on the same status as men and wore a uniform blouse with insignia.

• Native Contributions - At the time of the First, Second and Korean Wars, Native people were considered wards of the court under the Indian Act, couldn't vote, and because they were not considered full citizens of Canada were exempt from military service. Nonetheless, approximately 3,500 Native men (35% of of military-age Native population), responded quickly and in impressive numbers to join the Allied Forces in European battlefields; more than five hundred Natives gave their lives defending values that were meaningful to all Canadians.

• Trent University - Exhibit of World War I Nurses - By the end of the war, 2,504 Canadian nurse volunteers had served overseas with the Canadian Army Medical Corps Nursing Unit in England, France, Gallipoli, Alexandria and Salonika. They treated every sort of wound and devised new techniques for handling the administration of anesthesia in the field. More info and links at this site.

• Photo's of the Great War - It was supposed to be 'The War to End All Wars.' For over four years World War One raged on, leaving in its wake a toll of death and destruction such as the world had never seen. These are the images of that time, an eternal testament to all those whose lives were lost or forever altered by 'The Great War.'

• Propaganda Postcards of the Great War (World War I) - The site features a collection of war-themed postal cards produced during World War 1 (1914 - 1919). More than 2,500 cards will eventually be displayed in an organized fashion. The cards are mementos of a world at war during the second decade of the 20th century.

• The League of WWI Aviation Historians - Aviation Historians begins at a meeting called in April 1985 in Dallas, Texas, by George Williams, one of the field's most active researchers. Out of that meeting an idea was born to not only continue publishing the best in First World War aviation history for those already interested in the period, but to spread the word to others and, in the process, elevate the study of 1914-1918 military aviation to the level of true academic pursuit.

It will also mention the number of casualties that Germany caused by using gas and the psychological effect it had on the Allied soldiers. The paper will examine how gas effected several battles. • Russian Monstrous Giant Tanks of WWI - WWI reanimated the idea of the Middle Ages. The idea was based on a simple fact: it is easier to hold the line than to attack. An attacking side needs protection. There were armored vehicles invented for that purpose.

• Teaching With Documents Lesson Plan: The ZimmermannTelegram - In January of 1917, British cryptographers deciphered a telegram from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt, offering United States territory to Mexico in return for joining the German cause. This message helped draw the United States into the war and thus changed the course of history.
