Strategies and Resources
for Using the Internet Effectively in the Classroom
The Internet can be very
powerful when teachers take their own classroom curriculum and structure
Internet content to provide new types of learning opportunities for
students. For many teachers this is not yet a reality. Most teachers
are at a disadvantage in effectively using the Internet in the classroom
because they did not grow up with the technology that is prevalent in
the lives of their students. A 2002 study titled "The
Digital Disconnect: The widening gap between Internet-savvy students
and their schools" by the PEW
Internet and American Life Project found predictably that students in
grades 6-12 have the skills and desire to use the Internet as part of
their learning, while their teachers, for the most part, do not. If
we are to keep up with the new ways in which students access the world
around them, a deeper understanding of how the Internet works and how
it can be used in the classroom must be learned.
These series of modules will
help provide teachers with a basic foundation of using the Internet
and also examine strategies and resources in which they can effectively
use it with their students.
