| The Captain, or Kwaaypaay, was the leader of the village or band. This position was one of power and status. Leadership was often inherited; but sometimes when a leader died, a successor was chosen from another village to insure harmony between villages. It was thought that an outsider brought an objective attitude.
The kwaaypaay was usually male, and served as the mediator in village disputes. He organized and directed all ceremonies for individuals and for weather control. He determined when to move to an area for new resources based on input from shamans. He lead diplomatic or war efforts. He organized defensive strategies. The kwaaypaay was responsible for making decisions for the village based on his greater knowledge of resources. The captain has directed you to assist with the preparations for the next celebration of the spring equinox. You, along with several others (both boys and girls) will be helping the adults gather the necessary supplies and prepare the ceremonial grounds in the mountains. Some of the village members will go to the coast to gather fish and shellfish, shells, and ??. Other members will go to the river to gather clay, reeds, and willow leaves. Still others will travel to the mountains to gather acorns, hunt rabbits and deer, and prepare for the celebration. You will need to complete certain tasks and challenges in order to bring these things back to the village. Throughout the Palace game, the kwaaypaay will be able to answer your questions and help you. You must be inside the hut in order to talk to the kwaaypaay. There are at least two ways to get to the hut while in the Palace game. You can select "Options" then "Go To" from the menubar to bring up a small window with the rooms listed, or you can click on "Ask the Kwaaypaay." If you are playing the game, you should finish reading this paragraph, then return to the hut to meet up with the rest of the players and begin playing. Once you reach the hut, you will go inside and get your assignments from the kwaaypaay. To receive a special treat, when you get back to the hut type the word "kwaaypaay" without quotes. Remember, the members who work the hardest and do the best work will be given special treats and honors. Your family depends on your hard work so that they will have the things they need during the hard times ahead. Good Luck! |
