La Purísima Concepción Like Mission San Antonio, La Purísima Concepción is located in a remote area. Founded in 1787 by Father Fermín Lasuén, the Mission is dedicated to an idea rather than a person - the Immaculate Conception (the belief that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin). In 1844, when the Spanish priests left California under orders of the king of Spain, most of the Mission buildings were abandoned or sold off. It then fell into ruins. In 1951, the entire Mission was rebuilt using original tools and construction methods. This renovation is recognized as the most complete historic renovation in the western United States. Today it is the most authentic Mission and functions as a living history park. Click here to see the watercolor version or to see a full-screen image painting. |
