San Antonio de Padua Another of the Serra-founded Missions, San Antonio was established in July 1771. The first Christian marriage ceremony performed in California took place here. Because of its remote location, the Mission fell into complete ruin after abandonment. Restoration attempts were difficult because of extensive damage from heavy rains and the 1906 earthquake. Restoration began in earnest in 1948 with the help of the Hearst Foundation. The Mission is now an accurate reconstruction of the 1813 original, capturing the essence of life in early California.
