San Buenaventura San Buenaventura, founded in 1782 in what is today downtown Ventura, California, was the last Mission founded by Father Junipero Serra and was among the most prosperous, due in part to a seven-mile irrigation canal. Built by the padres and the local Chumash Indians, the canal brought abundant water supplies to the Mission grounds. Many ships stopped at the nearby harbor to take on supplies of fresh fruits and vegetables. Following a renovation that radically altered the original design, the church was restored so that today it is an approximate replica of the original.
