San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo

Second in the chain of the Mission, San Carlos Borromeo was founded in June 1770 by Father Junipero Serra. San Carlos served as the headquarters for the duration of Father Serra's California Missionary work--a period of fifteen years. From this base he managed the building of nine Missions. Father Serra was buried here after his death in 1784.

The magnificent stone church and quadrangle fell into decay until 1884, when Father Angel Casanova took charge of the restoration. There have been numerous additional restoration efforts since the early 1920s. Tupa declared this particular Mission "too beautiful to paint."
