San Fernando Rey de España San Fernando Rey, founded by Father Fermín Lasuén in September 1797, was a thriving Mission whose main enterprise was cattle ranching. An estimated 21,000 head of cattle were raised on the Mission ranchos in the early 1820s. Like so many others along the chain, this powerful Mission fell into ruin. Only one main building survived the years of neglect. In 1916 local citizens, who felt passionate about restoring the Mission, held a candle procession, with each participant paying one dollar for a candle. More than six thousand people attended, and restoration began. An earthquake in 1971 severely damaged the chapel; its restoration was completed in 1974.
