San Francisco Solano

Father José Altimira founded the last of the twenty-one Missions, San Francisco Solano, in 1823 without the authority of the Mission presidente. This is the only Mission founded under California's Mexican period. Father Altimira's approach to conversion of the Indians was unusually harsh. He mistreated the converts, and many fled. Eventually an uprising occurred, and Father Altimira was removedand replaced by Father Buenaventura Fortuni, who tried to recapture what was then left of Mission Solano.

In the 1840s an adobe church replaced the original, and extensive restoration during the early 1900s brought the Mission to its present-day state.
