San Gabriel Arcángel

Fathers Pedro Cambón and Angel Somera founded Mission San Gabriel in September, 1771. San Gabriel was a very prosperous mission, with abundant crops and cattle, hundreds of fruit trees, and, at one time, the largest winery in California.

Because of its location at a key crossroads, many overland explorers stopped at the Mission for rest and supplies. It is for these reasons that San Gabriel is known as the "queen" of the Missions.

Sadly, San Gabriel Arcángel was severely damaged by the 1987 Whittier earthquake. After an extended closure of the buildings, repairs have begun.

See the watercolors by Father Jerome Tupa of San Gabriel Arcángel or click on the painting on the left to see a full-screen image.
