San José Father Fermín Lasuén founded San José in June 1797. This was considered one of the more successful Missions in its day. An earthquake destroyed the Mission in 1868. So much damage was done that only the padres' living quarters remained. A painstakingly accurate historical renovation was completed in 1985. Real adobe bricks and authentic tools were used to re-create the rough and uneven appearance of the original structure. This painting was the last in the series of twenty-one oils to be painted. Tupa was soon to travel to the Bahamas, and the vivid tropical colors in this painting foreshadow his upcoming trip.
