San Juan Capistrano

Today Mission San Juan Capistrano is the most famous of all the Missions. Founded in 1776 by Father Junipero Serra, the mission was expanded to accommodate a growing population of Indians.

Most of the mission was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1812, a time when more than thirteen hundred Indians lived and worked there. Restoration began in the 1920s.

Today the Mission is recognized for its beautiful gardens, fountain, and the legendary migratory swallows who make their home in and around the buildings each spring.
