San Luís Obispo de Toloso

Founded by Father Junipero Serra in September, 1772, this Mission had its beginnings around a grizzly bear hunt in 1772 that netted nine thousand pounds of meat. The meat was then sent to the Missions at Carmel and San Antonio to prevent mass starvation.

It was at San Luis Obispo Mission that the quintessential California red clay tile roof was invented. After hostile local Indians set the thatched roof of the Mission on fire several times, the padres, remembering the tile of Spain, took local clay and molded it over wooden forms to create fireproof roof tiles. The Mission is one of eight that later developed into a town, in this case, San Luis Obispo.
