San Luís Rey de Francia

San Luis Rey, the largest mission in the United States, was the last mission founded by Father Fermín Lasuén, in June 1798. The well-liked Father Antonio Petri, who lived at San Luis Rey for thirty-six years, spearheaded the spectacular growth of the mission. The ambitious building plan included an elaborate sunken garden and lavandería (laundry area), plus hundreds of exotic plants.

Restoration of this mission is still under way. Because the site is so large, it will take many years and significant resources to complete.
