San Miguel Arcángel Father Fermín Lasuén founded Mission San Miguel Arcángel in July, 1797. The Mission church, built between 1816 and 1818, boasts one of the better preserved church interiors in the Mission chain. After the Missions were released from the Spanish church in 1834, the building was used as a private residence. Later rooms were rented out, and Mission San Miguel Arcángel was reportedly used as a saloon, dance hall, and even a general store. It was turned over to the Franciscan Order for use as a monastery in 1928. Tupa again took artistic license, repositioning in the fountain, actually located outside the walls of the Mission, to the center of the Mission quadrangle.
