Santa Clara de Asís This is the first Mission to honor a woman, Saint Clara of Assisi. Another of the Serra-founded Missions, Santa Clara was established in January, 1777. It was the location of the first college in California. Some call Santa Clara the most persistent of all twenty-one Missions. It has been relocated five times, and the present-day church is the sixth version. Earthquakes, floods, and fires seemed to follow the Mission each time it was moved. The Mission today is a reconstruction of the 1822 version, and many of the objects and decorations inside the church are replicas of the originals.
