Santa Cruz

Mission Santa Cruz, founded by Father Fermín Lasuén in 1791, was twelfth in the chain of Missions. Santa Cruz had few Indian residents and was a humble Mission-in fact, the smallest of all the Missions.

Santa Cruz was plagued by strained relationships was residents of the neighboring pueblo Branciforte; there were constant problems between Branciforte's Spanish settlers and the church. After succumbing to the ravages of storms and earthquakes, the Mission church was rebuilt at half its original size in 1931.
