Creating a TeacherWeb: Vision

Publishing your Web page

Once your page is ready for the public, you'll need to copy it to a Web server. Here's how:

Step 1:  Find a Web server

Many Internet Service Providers will provide you with a few Megabytes of space on their Web server as part of your Internet service.  If your ISP doesn't, you could look into one of the many Free Services.

Step 2:  Get your Account Information

You'll need a location and password to connect to the server.

Step 3:  Download FTP Software

FTP software allows you to upload to and download files from a server.  Ws_ftp and CuteFTP are common  FTP applications for Windows. You can download CuteFTP at www.cuteftp.com.   CuteFTP has an online manual with a quick start section.  See www.alexanders.com/ftp/howtoftp.html for help with ws_ftp and Fetch for the Macintosh.

Step 4:  Connect

Once you launch your FTP software , all you need to do is enter the server location and password.  You should be able to save this information to make it easier next time you connect.

Step 6:  Upload

Once you connect, you should see a window that shows your local hard drive and a window and another that shows your server directory.  Navigate to the appropriate directory in both windows.  If you are using the Microsoft Personal Web Server, look in C:/WEBSHARE/WWWROOT/ for your FrontPage web.  To upload a file, select it and either click the upload arrow (Ws_ftp) or drag to the server window (CuteFTP).  That's it!
