The Knowledge Network Explorer (KNE) began in 1992 in response to the needs of California teachers, librarians, and students. Faced with a daunting array of technologies and the overwhelming need to train students and staff in the use of technology, the Knowledge Network Explorer developed new services for schools, libraries, and community colleges.
A key component of the California-based program, the Education First Initiative, was to equip educational institutions with ISDN technology and enable access to on-line resources, videoconferencing, and other electronic learning applications. The Education First ISDN offer ended December 31, 1997.
And the beat goes on.... Education First was never "just" a free year of high-speed telecommunications. While the offer of free ISDN lines ended on December 31, 1997, the Knowledge Network Explorer still offers several very popular "products and services" including:
